OK. I did. Read more

The Performance Clock and Coaching
For many years now I have been talking about, writing about, presenting workshops and teaching on the Performance Clock concept.
It has been and still is in my view the single most important concept in high performance sport or any field of endeavour for that matter.
Yet, for some reason, the majority of people still don’t get it.
Everyday, the newspapers, the television and the online news and sports services are loaded with stories about coaches, athletes and sporting teams who are failing due to their lack of understanding and acceptance of the Performance Clock, or more accurately, their failure to do anything about it.
Yet, by understanding this one simple concept, anyone who wants to be successful in sport has the single most valuable tool they will ever need in the palm of their hand (or at least on the screen of their laptop).
Let’s have another look at this most important of sporting principles, The Performance Clock and how it relates to effective coaching. Read more

A New Head Coach is No Longer the Solution in High Performance Sport.
There was a time when a new head was the solution to all problems in a high performance sports team.
Team not winning - get a new head coach.
Team’s culture not right – get a new head coach.
Team’s attitude and commitment flagging – get a new head coach.
Times have changed.
A new head coach is no longer the solution in high performance sport. Read more

What do Athletes Believe? What drives their Behaviours? Performance Environment Values Poll.
Lots of Clubs and Coaches talk about the underpinning “values” system in their organisation.
You can define “values” as those core beliefs which influence attitudes and behaviours.
Values are the “fuel” – the driving force behind the beliefs and behaviours of athletes (and indeed coaches, staff, management and the Board) in the D.A.T.E. – Daily Athlete Training Environment.
Get the values system right and the Club will succeed.
Get it wrong and the Club will fall victim to the three Cs: Controversy, Conflict and Crisis.
I am interested in your thoughts on this.
Take a moment to complete this poll.
You can select up to a maximum of three values.

A Fish Rots from the Head: Solving Problems in High Performance Sport.
In High Performance Sport, experience is important.
Knowledge of the sports industry is critical.
An understanding of the culture of high performance is vital.
But ultimately, success is high performance sport comes down to possessing exceptional talent and ability in five core areas:
- Problem solving;
- Crisis management;
- Creating and sustaining a high performance environment, i.e. change management and continuous improvement;
- Finding, training and retaining the right people;
- Quality, consistent leadership.
And of these five skills, problem solving is perhaps the least understood – primarily because it hard to measure, hard to define and next to impossible to teach.
Here is Problem Solving in High Performance Sport 101. Read more

Coaching and Visualisation (Imagery): See the Coach You Want to Be.
Many athletes incorporate visualisation (imagery) into their training programs and their preparation for competition.
Usually visualisation involves athletes using their minds to “imagine” (visualise) situations and how they would or should manage those situations when faced with them in real life.
For example, an athlete training for the Olympic Games might visualise the sights and sounds of the Olympic final so that they become familiar with that performance setting.
Visualisation can be a powerful tool in athlete preparation but what about using Visualisation to improve your coaching?
